UCF's Ladybug will screen at Red Stick

The Visual Language Track of the Department of Digital Media at UCF proudly announces the screening of “LadyBug: Action Hero” at the Red Stick International Animation Festival in Baton Rouge, LA., April 22-25, 2009. Working as a team for a year and a half, twenty-two UCF undergraduate students created every aspect of production on this short digital animated film, which won an "Excellence and Innovation in the Digital Media Arts Award" at the 2008 iDMAa Student Showcase and was also shown last summer at the Eureka festival sponsored by Orlando SIGGRAPH.
"Ladybug: Action Hero" is based on a children's book and ballet of the same name by Kim Tuttle, which tells the story of cooperation between very small friends to overcome the bullying of an overwhelming enemy. The film integrates its visuals to the original music written by North Carolina School of the Arts Student, Chris Heckman, to tell a story completely without words.
“ ‘LadyBug: Action Hero’ is the third short film from UCF’s Visual Language Track” says Darlene Hadrika, Visual Language Instructor and former Disney Animator. “This is a great opportunity to make the industry aware of the exceptional work by our students here at UCF.”
Students developed the visual story, character / production designs and built 3D digital environments and character models. They animated, lit, rendered and composited all elements in the film while working as a member of a production team. Using Maya, Shake, Photoshop, Flash and Final Cut Pro software, students learned every step of digital animation production.
While ‘LadyBug’ is making the rounds on the festival circuit, the Visual Language Track is currently finishing production on the much anticipated “Atlas’ Revenge” to be premiered in early May 2009. Another film beginning production, under the working title “Goblin Garbage”, is set for release in May 2010.
