Miami's Freedom Tower is currently closed for renovations. The tower is set to reopen in 2025, the centennial of its first opening. The Freedom Tower at Miami Dade College has a long history as a beacon of hope, opportunity and freedom for Miami. The Miami Film Festival, The Museum of Art and Design at Miami Dade College, and the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives invites filmmakers to create a 10-minute documentary film about the Freedom Tower for full and unlimited use by MDC to celebrate the anniversary. The film should make use of archival materials, new interviews and "b-roll".
MDC is currently requesting proposals from experienced filmmakers who would like to be considered. Applications opened in February and will close April 14th, 2024. The hope is to convince viewers "You can't tell the story of Miami without telling the story of the Freedom Tower." Three finalists will be selected and invited to receive $5,000 to assist in creating a 2-minute sample documentary. The sample must be completed by July 30, 2024. The final filmmaker selected will be provided with an additional $30,000 to complete a 10-minute film. The final 10-minute film must be completed by January 31, 2025.
