Mad Cowboy, the documentary about Howard Lyman, was selected by the Artivist Film Festival as Best Feature in the Animal Advocacy category. Bob Allen, the film's Co-Executive Producer and Chief Storyteller at i.d.e.a.s., and the film's Producer, Dr. Patrick Fitzgerald, were on hand to accept the award during the festival's screening and awards ceremony on November 12, 2006.
"As producers, Pat Fitzgerald and I are thrilled that Artivist selected this film for a Best Feature award," said Bob Allen in a prepared statement. "It's important that stories addressing human and animal rights, freedom of speech and environmental issues are given credence and made available to the general public." He continued, "This film, which looks at Mad Cow Disease and the politics of agriculture, ecological sustainability, and human health, makes a strong statement about industrial farming and its impact on the planet and on our fellow beings. The opportunity to work with a talent like Michael Tobias made this project irresistible."
Howard Lyman, made famous by his appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show and the subsequent legal battle with the Cattleman's Association, is the documentary's main focus. Lyman's twenty year career working to educate Americans about the impact of industrial farming is depicted through interviews, news clips and vivid cinematography. The film also examines the free speech issue central to the $180 million dollar lawsuit against Lyman and Winfrey, one in which they eventually prevailed.
Written and Directed by Michael Tobias, "Mad Cowboy" is A Dancing Star Foundation Film. The film was produced by Dr. Patrick Fitzgerald in Association with Integrity Arts Films, a division of i.d.e.a.s. Entertainment.
