A Top Ten Finalist in Final Draft's International "Big Break" Screenwriting Contest, 2007.
“A nice little indy film about the loss of innocence and the discovery that the world is a more complex and darker place than was thought. As heavy at that sounds, the give and take between the friends is often hysterically fun, as is the wonderful McGuffin at its center - patio furniture. Well-written with an unusual premise, likable characters, funny dialogue, a lively style and a surprisingly touching ending.”
– Final Draft Judges
At once hilarious and tender, The Last of the Tough Guys centers around rebellious Eric, who lives on Long Island with his well-to-do grandfather, a revered, retired tough guy who’s tired of paying for Eric’s mistakes. When Eric’s estranged, yet favorite, uncle on Staten Island calls him and requests “five sets of wicker furniture” Eric wants to prove himself. With buddies Sal and Dom, the night becomes an unexpected rite of passage into a world Eric thought he wanted to be a part of, as his seemingly simple heist uncovers a dark family secret.
Focusing on a trio of friends and their elaborate plan to pull off a simple robbery in order to solve all their problems.
Eric (AGE: 18-25)
Handsome, restless, and ambitious, Eric lives on Long Island with his wealthy grandfather and manipulates his pals Sal and Dominic into illegal mischief, like robbing wicker patio furniture for the mafia. Having been taken by his grandfather from his reckless mom and uncle on Staten Island as a child, Eric’s need to be in charge results in a half-baked scheme that may fool the others, but he struggles with feeling replaceable, insignificant, ignored and abandoned. When his uncle sends him to the dark side of town, Eric’s self-centered orbit crash lands into a dark reality. Only when Sal and Dominic get way in over their heads in order to help Eric does it dawn on Eric that a selfish life is a living death. At the end, saving his friends also saves Eric from himself. Luckily, owning up to his responsibilities and taking care of his friends adds a touch of admirable honor to Eric’s downward spiral before it’s too late.
Dominic (AGE: 18-25)
Dominic is cute, anal retentive, hilariously funny, and makes friends easily with his endearingly good nature, even older female ones. He lives with his parents where he keeps his room spotless and has a comb for every day of the week labeled on his dresser. Well read, meticulous and sweet Dom often bears the brunt of Sal’s cruel jokes. But Dom’s no fool. His black belt in Judo, along with a fierce devotion to his friends, make him a force to be reckoned with.
