Vargas Starts 2016 Film Slam Season on Sunday
(released
Wednesday, December 2, 2015)
By Douglas Lorah
The Film Slam begins the 2016 season on Sunday, December 6th at the Enzian Theater. There is a new host and producer, Jen Vargas, who took over toward the end of this past year. She replaces Tim Anderson, who has recently moved on to become the Programming Coordinator for the Enzian.
Vargas is the fifth person to produce and host the long running event. It started out as a weekly screening series at the Downtown Media Arts Center in downtown Orlando and was conceived by Jason Neff. He soon left the DMAC and John Theisen took over the reigns. Around this time, two things happened. The Film Slam went to a monthly event. Also, Brian Feldman and Constantine Preda started running a regular screening event at Austin's Coffee on Fairbanks in Winter Park. They aptly named it Flicks on Fairbanks.
In 2006, the DMAC stopped screening films in their 2nd floor theater and Flicks on Fairbanks discontinued.
In January 2007, the Film Slam moved to the Enzian Theater and it was hosted by John Theisen and Brian Feldman. The duo brought a comedic approach to the show that lasted a year. Feldman left the Slam and has since left Central Florida. He took his many performance art talents to the nation's capitol. Theisen continued hosting the show through 2010 and in January 2011, Tim Anderson took over. That brings us to the present.
Jen Vargas will preside over the event that begins at 1pm. The list of films has not been released at this time. To enter your short film into the Film Slam, go to: www.enzian.org
