(released

By Douglas Lorah
Like our beaches, the Florida film industry has been making small waves lately. But like the times when a hurricane hits our shores, there may be a big wave coming. The Florida Project is premiering on Monday, May 22 as part of the Director's Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival.
The Florida Project was written by Sean Baker and Chris Bergoch, the same team that made the iPhone-lensed Sundance hit of 2015, Tangerine. Just like that film, Sean Baker also directed.
It is produced by June Pictures, Cre Film, and Freestyle Picture Company. Handling local Florida production roles were Elayne Schneiderman as line producer, Jennifer Radzikowski as UPM, and Mullen Casting rounded up the young actors from the local area.
Starring Willem Defoe, Brooklynn Prince, and introducing Valeria Cotto, Bria Vinaite, and Christopher Rivera. Also, Kit Sullivan, who is listed on this site, has a role as the Arabian Nights Manager.
The story is about a six year old (Prince) and her ragtag group of friends whose summer break is filled with childhood wonder, possibility, and a sense of adventure, while the adults around them struggle with hard times. The main characters are the six year old Moonee (Prince), her mother Halley (Vinaite), and Bobby the motel manager (Dafoe).
Following the film's Twitter account, you can see that the team began location scouting in March 2015 continuing into March 2016 in Kissimmee along the US 192 corridor. Principle photography began June 30th, 2016 and finished August 17th with B-Roll running into the 18th.
According to Variety, Altitude Film Distribution has picked up rights for the UK and Ireland.
