When it comes to film festivals, every director knows you can't win them all. Orlando writer/director/producer Andrew Kenneth Gay and his co-producer Ryan Pomeranz were just lucky enough to win at a festival that counts.
For winning the Grand Jury Prize at this year's Palm Beach International Film Festival Student Showcase, Gay and Pomeranz have been awarded an all expenses paid trip to Hollywood to pitch their feature ideas to producers at Mandalay Pictures, the company behind I Know What You Did Last Summer and Donnie Brasco. The winning film, Love is Deaf, has played 20 film festivals throughout the United States and Canada.
Both Gay and Pomeranz recently graduated from the University of Central Florida with BFAs in Film Production and are currently enrolled as graduate students in the school's new Entrepreneurial Digital Cinema MFA program. Love is Deaf was the first of three creative collaborations between the two filmmakers. Pomeranz directed the other two, including On Being Your Average Joe, itself a very successful short on the festival circuit.
Gay's latest film, Melissa With A Heart Around It, will make its world premiere at the Australian International Film Festival in October. His screenplay for Melissa With A Heart Around It won the Best Unproduced Short Script award at the 2005 Ivy Film Festival, and Gay has also won multiple awards for his unproduced feature screenplay Indian River Oranges.
