New PAC to be Built in Downtown Orlando
(released
Thursday, July 26, 2007)
By Douglas Lorah
On Thursday, July 26th, the Orange County Commission voted 5-2 in favor of a new events center/arena, an upgraded Citrus Bowl, and a new performing arts center. The Orlando City Council had previously voted for the venues to be built in downtown Orlando.
While none of the venues may directly impact the film and television industry in central Florida, a new performing arts center puts much faith in the arts by the community. This in turn may reflect a stronger image on the film industry.
The arts center, to be named the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center due to a large contribution, will have large theatre spaces and it has been mentioned that the smaller venues may be used for film exhibitions.
Also, this will provide for more paid acting and stage jobs giving more stabilization to the film and television industry as they are strongly tied together.
Lasting late into the evening, the Orange County Commission heard from all parties, supporters and detractors. They covered every possible issue with regards to each venue and the combined effect on the region. The final vote literally took place in the 11th hour.
