Miami Dade College's Miami Film Festival will be going live on March 5, the first Friday of the month and continue until March 14, 2021.
This 38th annual event will be a hybrid festival of both in-theater and virtual presentations. The festival will open and close with world premiere films by Miami artists. Look for Miami artists Edson Jean's film "Ludi" and Jayme Gershen's "Birthright."
Festival venue Silverspot Cinemas in downtown Miami will be hosting the opening night screening. Edson Jean, a Latin-American actor/writer/director and IFP Narrative Labs alumnus, follows a private care service worker in Miami in Ludi. This is the first film to emerge from Miami's Oolite Arts Microbudget Feature Film Cinematic Arts Residency program established in 2019.
Jayme Gershen's documentary Birthright follows Miami-bred electro-pop musicians Afrobeta. The group Afrobeta is invited to play in Havana, Cuba. The documentary explores what it means to be and be from Cuba.
During the festival, look for Rita Moreno to be presented with a Precious Gem Icon Award on March 10, 2021. The festival will acknowledge actors from One Night in Miami, and The United States vs. Billie Holiday, as well as the cinematography in Nomadland.
