The Festival founded in 1984 by non-profit Film Society of Miami, Inc. has screened throughout Miami. In the festival’s sixth year, it found a home in the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center. In the late 1990's, the festival was transferred to Florida International University for a few years before landing in October 2003 under it's current umbrella of Miami Dade College (MDC).
The festival, known for international cinema showcasing and hosting international talent, added a second permanent festival "GEMS" the "JEWELS" of the fall season. The events started in 2015 and are held annually in October, exclusively at Tower Theater.
The GEMS 2018 will be held October 11-14, 2018. Films from Portugal, Paraguay, Italy, and Spain will part of GEMS. The four films are further distinguished as the first nominees announced for the festival's Jordan Ressler First Feature Award competition, which presents a jury-selected $10,000 cash prize to the best film by a filmmaker making their feature narrative debut.
The festival will also feature an exclusive selection of first completion films from the 36th edition of the Miami Film Festival slated for March 1-10, 2019.
Spanish artist, illustrator, painter Ana Juan created the 36th edition of the Miami Film Festival's poster. "Ana Juan's delightful creation to represent Miami Film Festival's 36th season evokes the color and playfulness of Miami, with a beautiful femininity that captures our moment," said Miami Film Festival's executive director Jaie Laplante in a released statement.
